Farm City - Education of an Urban Farmer

Farm City chronicles Novella Carpenter's experiment with a mini farm in crime ridden Oakland, California among a colorful cast of friends and family.  Novella doesn't just stop at chickens; she also experiments with turkeys, ducks, rabbits, and eventually pigs.  An entertaining, thoughful, and heartfelt story, Novella illustrates how to raise animals on a limited budget that includes using discarded food from restaurants, scraps, and a lot of ingenuity.  

Farm City also reminds us of the programs during WWI & WWII aimed at promoting civilians to grow their own food (ala Victory Gardens) so that more food could be sent to troops.  More and more people today are going back to basics and building their own organic gardens and becoming more self sufficient.
